November is the month of a thousand festivities in Panama, but did you know our country celebrates two separate independence days? Understanding this unique history is the key to appreciating the depth of the tours we offer at The Panama Tours Company.
A Tale of Two Freedoms
Most nations have a singular date for independence, but Panama's story is intertwined with both Spain and Colombia.
November 3, 1903: Separation from Colombia
This is the most famous date. For over 80 years, Panama was part of Gran Colombia (later the Republic of Colombia). Tired of neglect and seeking control over their territory and future—especially with the looming prospect of a transoceanic canal—Panamanian leaders declared independence from Colombia. This date marks the birth of the Republic of Panama as the world knows it today.
November 28, 1821: Independence from Spain
This date is historically critical. Panama was one of the first Spanish colonies in the Americas, and on this day, we declared our independence from the Spanish Empire. However, immediately after securing freedom from Spain, Panama chose to voluntarily join the larger, newly formed Gran Colombia.
🌟 Which Independence Day Do We Celebrate Today, November 28th?
Today, November 28th, we celebrate the 1821 independence from Spain. It is a major national holiday that recognizes Panama's earliest assertion of sovereignty and its decisive step away from colonialism.
