If you have a trip to Panama on the horizon, a walk through the historic, brick-lined streets of Casco Antiguo is likely at the top of your itinerary. With its vibrant culture, stunning architecture, and oceanside views, it is a neighborhood that captures everyone's heart.
However, if you are planning to visit over the coming months, there is a major update you should know about.
A New Chapter for an Iconic Landmark
Panama's Ministry of Culture (MiCultura) has officially launched a massive, comprehensive restoration project for the historic Plaza de Francia and the surrounding Punta Chiriquí Colonial Wall.

Because this site is a designated UNESCO World Heritage location, the government is undertaking a deeply meticulous, 30-month (2.5-year) conservation project to preserve its 17th-century masonry, restore the iconic obelisk and Las Bóvedas dungeons, and upgrade the walkway along the bougainvillea-lined Paseo Esteban Huertas.
Equipment and construction barriers are actively being set up at the site. Because the project is being rolled out in five distinct phases, parts of the plaza, the sea wall, and the surrounding paths will be heavily restricted or entirely blocked off to the public to ensure everyone's safety.
What This Means For Your Visit
First, don’t panic! While the Plaza de Francia is a magnificent piece of history, Casco Antiguo itself remains entirely open, bustling, and beautiful.
For official details, timelines, and architectural plans regarding the project, you can read the official press release directly on the Ministerio de Cultura de Panamá Website.
